Emergence of B Corps and Benefit Corporations
Companies ranging from patagonia® to Warby Parker® to Hootsuite® have successfully scaled while adopting triple bottom line business practices. Essentially, these companies have proven that you can be profitable and still be good corporate citizens. Whether you are an investor wanting to learn more about how “B” adopters stack up, or an emerging venture aligned with triple bottom line practices, this talk is for you. This presentation will cover the following: (A) The history in a nutshell of shareholder primacy (i.e. profit above all) in corporate law; (B) The development of the legal benefit corporation entity and B Corp trade group in response; (C) Attitudes of millennials and industry trends towards corporate social responsibility; and, (D) Why this matters for our economy. Kevin is a registered patent attorney, active entrepreneur, and National Science Foundation (NSF) advisor for the research hub Center for Green Solid-State Electric Power Generation and Storage (CEPS). His practice areas include: patent and trademark prosecution, licensing and litigation; corporate law, with an emphasis on benefit corporations, socially responsible businesses and high-growth emergent companies; government contracts, with an emphasis on innovation funding; corporate and investor financing; and, technology commercialization. Kevin is a member of the Leadership Tennessee Class of 2020, a Putnam County commissioner, and board member to several environmental and social impact nonprofits.
