LaunchTN Commercialization Workshop - Resource Overview

Tennessee is one of few states with an entrepreneur-resource infrastructure operating at the state level. Through the TSBDC at the UT Martin REED Center and their statewide partner network, LaunchTN delivers curriculum, mentors and more to entrepreneurs building high-growth-potential businesses. The workshop will be held at the UT Martin REED Center at 240 South Lindell Street in Martin on Tuesday, October 29, 2019 from 11:30 – 1:30. Lunch will be provided. The Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program is a highly competitive federal program that encourages domestic small businesses to engage in research and development that has the potential for commercialization. Through a competitive awards-based program, SBIR enables small businesses to explore their technological potential and provides the incentive to profit from its commercialization. In addition, LaunchTN maintains a portfolio of resources for Tennessee-based entrepreneurial researchers to advance their commercialization efforts. These resources include: 1. Network programs that pair mentors with promising new companies and entrepreneurs 2. Microgrants that provide financial support for grant-writing assistance to Tennessee-based early-stage companies 3. The SBIR Matching Fund, which provides non-dilutive capital to Tennessee-based companies upon their successful federal grant award Please direct questions about the workshop to allie@launchtn.org.

Speaker(s): Allie Mikels joined LaunchTN in early 2019 to manage LaunchTN’s commercialization program portfolio. Prior to joining the team, she spent almost five years in workforce development at Project Return and managed the operations of their two social enterprises. Allie earned her undergraduate degree from Vanderbilt University in Economics and Public Policy and returned to Vanderbilt to complete a graduate degree in Community Development and Action. She is originally from Stroudsburg, PA. Morgan Dent joined the Launch Tennessee team in October of 2018 to take over Talent Portfolio initiatives. She works with the program team to build a robust talent pipeline for future entrepreneurs, as well as address current talent needs for growing businesses. Prior to joining Launch Tennessee, Morgan spent three years in local economic development, focusing on workforce development programs and business recruitment. Most recently she ran operations for a local startup, Forward It On, and worked with the Social Enterprise All
