Topic: Financing

Access to capital is one of the most important and most misunderstood parts of running or growing a small business. Many Tennessee entrepreneurs walk in with strong ideas and real determination, but they often feel lost when it comes to funding: Which lenders should they approach? What does the SBA actually guarantee? How much cash flow do they need? What documents are required? This workshop is designed to help TSBDC clients and prospective clients cut through the confusion and understand how the capital process truly works. We guide participants through the full range of funding options available to small businesses today: traditional bank loans, SBA backed programs, CDFIs, microlenders, lines of credit, equipment financing, and alternative or online lenders. Each option serves a different purpose, and clients will learn which paths fit their stage of business, financial position, and goals. A major part of the session focuses on the foundation lenders look for: strong business planning and realistic financial forecasting. Clients will see why cash flow drives lending decisions, how to present a clear business model, and what it takes to build a lender ready plan. We cover practical topics such as break even points, debt service coverage, collateral, equity injection, and the documentation lenders expect to see. We also address the common myths that frustrate entrepreneurs, such as believing a good idea guarantees funding, assuming grants are widely available for startups, or thinking credit will not matter. By tackling these misconceptions directly, clients walk away with accurate expectations and a smarter approach to funding. The workshop gives participants practical tools and step by step guidance they can use immediately. They will learn how to prepare for meetings with lenders, how to strengthen their financial story, and how to position themselves for future growth opportunities. At its core, this workshop reinforces the TSBDC mission by supporting Tennessee small businesses with clarity, honesty, and actionable guidance. By helping clients understand access to capital, we empower them to make better decisions, avoid costly missteps, and build stronger, more resilient companies.
