Managing is difficult. Managing in 2021 is more difficult than ever before. Workforces are growing in diversity, organizations are trying to operate during a pandemic, state and federal laws impacting places of employment are changing. The ability of organizations and their managers to navigate these changes are vital for organizational success. This presentation will focus on: 1. Discussing the impact of diversity in the workforce and how to manage diversity using the I.D.E.A. model, 2. The importance of OBJECTIVE measurements of employee performance, 3. The importance of the adoption, and frequent updating, of employee handbooks, and 4. The HR implications of legal challenges many organizations face today.

Speaker(s): Dr. Sean Walker is a Professor of Management in the Department of Management, Marketing, and Information Systems in the College of Business and Global Affairs at The University of Tennessee at Martin. He is also serving as Faculty Senate President for the 2020-2021 AY. He obtained both his MBA and PhD at Southern Illinois University Carbondale. Dr. Walker’s research interest, and primary teaching areas, assess the impact of psychological phenomenon on Human Resources and Organizational Behavior. Dr. Walker is also a Licensed Minister and Mediator, both of which provide him with training to educate students, colleagues, and external agents on how to reach mutually acceptable agreements when faced with conflict within the organization.
